The Challenge
The museum needed a way to provide visitors with instant, easy-to-understand information without relying on traditional methods like brochures or display signs. The goal was to create an engaging application where guests could learn more about each exhibit by simply using their smartphones. However, it was essential that this application be user-friendly, responsive, and capable of answering visitor questions in a natural and engaging way. The museum also wanted to ensure that the AI could communicate in both English and French to accommodate all guests.

The Process
Smashing Pixels partnered with the Grimsby Museum to create an easy-to-use AI chatbot that helps visitors learn about exhibits in a fun and interactive way. Instead of embedding the chatbot directly on the museum’s website, we set it up on a separate platform, accessible through a simple link.
For each exhibit, we added a unique QR code. Visitors just scan the code with their phone and are instantly connected to a chatbot that acts as their personal guide. They can ask questions, explore at their own pace, and get answers tailored to their interests.
We built the chatbots using historical information from the museum, making sure each one provided accurate, engaging details about its exhibit. To make the experience even more natural, we included a voice-activated option so visitors could talk to the chatbot instead of typing.

The Solution
With the introduction of AI-powered exhibit guides, the museum was able to offer a modern and engaging way for visitors to interact with history. Instead of simply reading plaques or printed materials, guests could now have a conversation with an AI that provided detailed, easy-to-understand explanations about each exhibit. The QR code system made it easy for visitors to access the AI guide without downloading any apps or dealing with complicated technology.
The ability to communicate in both English and French ensured that more visitors could comfortably interact with the chatbot. This new system not only improved the overall visitor experience but also provided the museum with valuable insights into what guests were most curious about. By analyzing visitor interactions with the AI, the museum could better understand which exhibits generated the most interest and adjust future displays accordingly.
With the successful launch of the AI exhibit guide, the Grimsby Museum has taken an important step toward blending history with technology. This innovative approach makes learning more accessible and engaging for visitors of all ages, setting a new standard for interactive museum experiences.
